Ford van auto column problem

I read an article about using a early Ford van to get a cheap tilt column. The problem is they talked about using the same mount off of your stock bronco column and moving it and 1" forward to give alittle more room in the cab. I have done all of this the only problem I have now is the steering shaft is to long to use the stock set up. There is 14" between shaft ends. Any ideas would be a great help.
Thanks!!!
Matt
