Hard top liftgate mechanism part issue

My hard top lifgate handle had rusted and just turns without opening the window. I ordered a new handle and lift gate center mechanism. My issue is with the center mechanism that the handle attaches to. It's too tall to fit inside the liftgate and won't allow the handle to turn (over all it's about 1/4" taller than the original part). The rods rub on the back edge of the opening where the plate would cover it on the inside. Has anyone else had this issue or used the new part from Jeff's? Maybe the '68 liftgate is a bit smaller than other years%)

This is the part I'm trying to replace.
