Anyone have experience with a 1960's Dana 60, powr-lok, 5x5.5, 16 spline, rear end? I'm basically concerned with the strength of the axles, and anyone's experiences with this unit. Thanks
I picked one up (actually drove the whole truck) for about $30. thought I got a bunch of good parts in an old International. Turned out to be the 16 coarse splines and the brakes were impossible to find parts for. At the moment I am not sure if the $30 for the whole thig was completely worth it. The transmission turned out to be a close ratio T-19, not the granny. So it has a life as a work truck now. I don't think the stock size tires will ever be enough to break those axles. But my research didn't show anyone using them and how to change them to the bigger more common axles. Also the spindles on my axle are supposedly too small as well. I don't remember seeing lockers for the 16 spline, and doing a 60 for a fun truck without locking it doesn't make sense to me.
I had a 1969 F-100 4x4 that ran a 5x5.5 Dana 60. The Powr-loc is my favorite diff for street and off road and a Detroit for everything serious. The only problem I had is that the axle bearing is not a sealed unit. It is a tapered bearing that you have to shim to set the load. If you have one, pull the axle out ( same way as a 9 inch ) and you will find the shims between the 4 bolt axle plate and the brake backing plate. BTW I have taken several of these apart both for myself and friend and the axle spline count was always 30. Every 16 spline one I saw was a 3/4 ton 8 lug.The gears and lockers are the same as 3/4 tons. I thought about one in my Bronco when I could only find fullwidth Dana 44s for the front. Hope this helps.

I have a 64 F100 shortbed 1/2 ton that I'm installing a 429/c6 thunderjet into. The rear end came original with the truck. Kinda cool with a power-lok and 4:10 ratio. It'll just be a daily driver. Not positive it's a 16 spline but was told it was by an online drivetrain company. I guess I'll have to get in there and look to make sure. Either way, 16 or 30, the rear end will probably serve my purposes. If interested, I have pictures of it on te slick60s website. Just click on my use name jbolivar and then link to my gallery. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to burning some rubber.
I also thought all the old 16-spline 60s were 8-lug..the one I have is. Its under an F-250 that I converted to dual rear wheels and a dump body. So it has hauled WAY more than it was ever itended to and has done so with over 250K miles on it and the cover never been off the thing as far as I know. However..the axles look to be same size as the 30-spline as far as size overall..so I would have to assume about the same in strength too?
