are all c4's created equal?

Or are later model one better and can they be used just by swapping the 4x4 parts from an early c4?

No. Later models ('71+) are generally better. Most parts are interchangeable across all years. Some are not. Broncos are the only 4x4's to ever have the C4 so those are considered late C4's.
