Any idea what part this is?

It's on the passenger side firewall, there is a vacuum line that runs to the fuel tank, but what is it's purpose? The top of the canister is taped off.
Thanks for the help! Still trying to figure out my new toy.

its a charcoal canister ... its function is to use the vapors in the fuel tank and burn them off for better emissions..also helps keeps down the fuel smell ... it doesnt harm your performance at all .. alot of people take them off thinkin they gain some power.. but they dont .. yours mite be broke and someone taped it up cause of the fuel smell.. im not sure exactly why they did that..

And in case you run into references for charcoal cannisters that are round and mounted down on the frame, it was just a running change that Ford made. Earlier ones were round and flatter shaped, later ones rectangular and taller, like yours.
