Fuel sending unit issue W/ digital dash

I have been trying to get my dakota digital dash to register my fuel level with no success. It reads EE then flashes. I have a 23 gallon steel tank that I purchased 11 years ago and never installed it till I finished my frame off. I tried all of its different settings Ford Gm but still wont work. When I change the settings some will start at 99% then drop to 45% then EE, others will start the opposite and count up progressively till it says EE. The tank is full could it be reading outside of the parameters causing the EE? Do i need to create a custom setting? Is my sending bad from sitting for so many years? Its grounded good and connected to the sending unit wire from my Painless harness. Any ideas? Appreciate your input!

Use an ohmmeter to measure the reistance of the sender. Then check the resistance and continuity to ground of the sender wire from end to end. Good sender is about 10 ohms full, 73 ohms empty, 23 ohms half scale. Wire resistance should be 1 ohm or less and probably 100K+ ohms to ground.

Thanks Viperwolf you are definately the electrical guru on this site. I will try this in the morning. Everything works great after replacing the wiring harness except the fuel level.
