I have a whinning squeeling noise that I thought was the tranny or transfer. I just got finished with a tranny and transfer rebuild with new clutch, pilot and throwout. The noise is still there. I have since driven it with my freind hanging out the door to listen and we think its the rear end. I does not do it all the time but is rather loud when it happens. It will do it coming down hill with the trans and transfer in nuetral. My 9 has new axle bearings and is loaded with 5.38's, a detroit and 31 spline moisers. I am also getting a fair amount of lag in the rear end when I take off. I know the detroits do that and I have not driven it in a year or more but it feals worse.

A few questions before I answer...
Noise change on accel to coast?
Noise change left or right hand turn?
Noise change with clutch pedal in or out?
Noise change with speed? At what speed?
Answer any and all with any combinations.

Ok, here is my guess. Your rear drive line angle at rear end is bad. it is setting up a vibration that travels up the drive shaft and into the rear output shaft. The two small gears that mesh with the shift collar are vibrating together making the noise you hear.

Tell your friend to man up and stop crying when you drive while he hangs out the door.

Did I win?;)

Sorry, margarita night.

So, it did it after the rear end rebuild? Noisy pinion gears/whine?

I lost the rear drive line in moab and I did it ounce or twice then. Even with the drive line off the rear end is still spining in side with the detroit.

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have any 'lag' in the rear end! I run a Detroit and have never felt anything like that. Is something in the rear end 'binding'? Are your gears too tight?

Double double? Dude there's an In and Out in Ouray now? That's it, I'm moving...

dangerous try. put the rear axle on jack stands. apply light pressure on the e brake and see if it will make noise that way. if the rear wheels are off it will make it a little bit safer.
the more ways that you support/hang the truck the better.
i am sure that i will getdawged for this.

dangerous
have you tried removing the wheels and lightly appling the e brake.
jack stands and find other ways to hold up your truck for unseen safety issues.
i will get dawged for this but

a few questions before i answer...
Noise change on accel to coast? very little ..no pinion bearing or ujoint.
noise change left or right hand turn?some somtimes ..no outer axle bearings or front wheel bearings.
noise change with clutch pedal in or out? no ..no pilot bearing, input bearing, countershaft bearings
noise change with speed? At what speed? starts above 20 and goes down to 5
answer any and all with any combinations.

Diff side bearings
Transfercase... poss output shaft bearing
Something in the bellhousing rubbing against flywheel

That's all the darts I have to throw.
