Rebuilding a 66 302. Will go with a mild cam. Would anyone have yah or nah with regards to putting an Edelbrock 1405 600cfm carb on this application. I will go with a performer or torker intake. Thoughts?????

first question back at ya is do you plan on wheeling it? if so then edelbrock carbs suck if you try ANY type of angle. for street use it'd be ok, but i still prefer holley.

It will be street use only. I have always used Holley myself, but I think I have found a good deal on a completely rebuilt Edelbrock. I have also always had Small Block Chevy's, I know, I said the evil word. 600cfm was a good size for that application, I figured a 600cfm would also be good for the 302.

I'm far from knowledgeable, but I've been told that 600cfm is a bit rich, and that 500cfm has better throttle response.

That said I have a 1406 600cfm Edelbrock on my 302 and while I haven't been able to really put it through it's paces yet, it runs great.

600 will be ok. 500 will give you a little better throtle response. I have used Eldelbrocks and always liked them but they do suck off road. So if she is a pavement pounder go for it.

No you can get a 500 cfm Edlebrock and you can get a 470 Holley that is a four barrel. A edlebrock 1403 electric choke or 1404 manual choke is a four barrel.

600 cfm carbs are fine I like the throttle response that 500 cfm carbs give a little more. As for intake go with the performer the torkers a more for higher RPM's and can make tuning a little tougher.

Agreed with what has been said so far. With your mild cam, your 600 should work fine. Of course, that might depend on what "mild" is in your case.
I ran both a 625 and 500 (both Carter versions) and for my totally stock engine the 500 was a bit snappier, like has been said. However, the 625 did work very well too, so it sounds like either one should be fine for your mildly built 302.
And once you get used to it, I think you'll really like the ease of tuning/tweaking of the AFB design.

I am finishing up installing a Edelbrock Performer 1403 500 cfm 4 barrel, 2181 Performer intake and Edelbrock's Performer Plus "RV" cam. I dont care as much for HP as I do low end torque for my 351W. Its already bored .030 about 3,500 miles ago. The BC Shorty headers with the 2-in 2-out exhaust to a magnaflo. I haven't had a chance to put it on the road yet. My set up should be just fine for the street and back wood roads. My days of wheelin over boulders are over. Just get me to the tailgatin spot or my favorite deer stand and I will be just fine!

Or you can get a 480 cfm Autolite 4100, which works just like the 2100, except maybe a tad more economical, and does not recognize angles less than 90 degrees. Just sayin'.
