Is the lightning intake lower overall than the truck intake and BC adapter and car upper? Lightning lower and explorer upper is what I'm talking about.

Not sure about lower but mine clears my hood with no scoop with a 2 inch body lift.

I have a 1" body lift and my current set up is going to hit the hood and wonder if this will remedy it. I don't want anymore body lift or a scoop if I can help it.

I tried to use a 1/2 inch spacer and my hood wouldn't close.. So I guess I should have said... it barely clears with the 2 inch BL.

Neither will fit under a stock hood without a body lift. I have run both combos, though I never actually measured the difference on height since I installed a fiberglass hood and had plenty of clearance with both. I would guess that they are about the same height. The car upper is shorter but adapter pushes it back up.

I still have the old parts in my garage so I could take some measurements this weekend if you want some exact numbers on any difference in height.

So the GT40 setup on a 5.8 clears with a 2"BL? Good to know. I really want to get rid of my Proflow hood and go back to a stock hood.

Pat, here are a few reference pics for you. Mine has the lightning upper and lower, 1"BL and extreme motor mounts. I really wanted to keep the stock hood but it's not going to happen for me.

well since my lighting upper and lower are sitting on the kitchen counter i measured it looks to be about 10.75 tall if that helps at all.

Man, that's close though. I know it's not as close as it might seem, but still, too bad you couldn't stuff it under the stock hood.

What's hitting though? You could clock the engine on it's mounts to level out the TB flange with the plenum, then space the transmission up a bit (if there's room in the tunnel) to tilt the front down a bit.

Then, after all that work, when it still doesn't fit, just use the taller hood like you were planning!;D

Someone measured this difference about a year ago. From what I remember, the truck lower, bc adapter, 5.0 upper was a tad shorter if I remember correctly. I'll try to find the thread. For any 351 efi combo, you need either a body lift, taller hood or some combo there of.

In addition, if you want to keep everything as low as possible, ditch the HD motor mounts and go back to stock mounts. I had to with mine unfortunately, but it was a trade off I was willing to take. I can post a pic of Lightning upper and lower with stock motor mounts and a tape measure for reference.

I have both sitting in my garage so I took some measurements. The lightning upper and lower have a combined height of 10.5" (measuring from the bottom of the lower intake where it bolts to the engine block). By comparison, a 5.8 truck efi lower mated to a car upper using the BC Broncos adapter had a combined height of 10". So you save 1/2" going with the setup using the BC adapter. Not much, but depending on your body lift it could make a difference if you are using a stock hood.

Hey mattt, who's motor mounts did you have? If ours, they're not designed to raise the engine at all. Recently checked that theory and they came out same as stock when measured from the crank. Within less than 1/8" at the crank. Wonder if you and others that experienced a lifted engine either have some that were off a bit, or if the engine was twisted in the tower's slotted holes?

For anyone with our Extreme mounts, try "clocking" the engine first, to make sure you're not twisted in the towers.
I've even used the clocking method on stock type mounts, to help an Explorer serp idler clear the crossmember without notching.

This is probably the thread that mattt is referring to. Scrapper_MV compared a Lightning intake versus a truck lower and car upper using the BCB adapter. The lightning came in at 10.6" and the truck/car/adapter combo at 10", which essentially agrees with my measurements.

Yes, that is the thread I was talking about.

In regards to motor mounts....I have the West Coast Broncos HD mounts...sitting in a box, not on the Bronco. I did some research on stock motor mounts, and the differences between mfg. location and how old they are. The West Coast Broncos HD mounts I have are definitely taller than stock. I have pics and I think some dimensions in this older thread, classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=158859

Not all the stock motor mounts I ran across were the same height either...some were taller like the WCB ones. You can see it in the picture where I shot down the mounts in a row. The ones further from the camera lens are taller. So, they may be in the same box, with the same part #, but from what I saw....they're not all the same, dimensionally or otherwise. YMMV...

Wow lots of feedback on this. Thanks for all the reply's, I guess since I already have it in the way I do there is no sense in changing it and making it another 1/2" taller. Looks like I am going to have to go with some sort of scoop or taller hood. Thanks for measuring what you have for me.
