I spent two hours at pap today looking for the awd version. All the explorers had a "d" tranny code. What year and model had awd 4r70w?

If you are going to run the D20, then you will need the AA adapter. The AA adapter requires you having to disassemble the whole tranny anyways, so it will be way cheaper to get a 2wd unit.

'99+ have the stoutest internals. You may also find it's cheaper to get a '99+ 3.8 Mustang and swap in the 4x4 output shaft/adapter.

You can also use the ZF to D20 adaptor and bolt the AWD/4WD 4R70W to the D20 without rebuilding the transmission. The ZF to D20 adaptor makes the font of the D20 bolt up like a full size transfer case.

But if you do the AA adaptor to the D20 (actually the late AOD to D20 adaptor with 3 extra little parts) that does require a complete teardown and build up to replace the output shaft. In that case a 2WD transmission is a perfect canidate.

does not matter if it is early or late aod adapter as long as you use the three little parts according to aa.
