Can a mech fuel pump suck air?

Is it possible for a mechanicle fuel pump to suck air into it somehow other than threw the fuel inlet? Or does the design of it make that impossible?

It won't suck anything except from the inlet unless it is broken.

If the diaphram is bad it may not pump but will sound like it is sucking.

maybe from the crankcase?
