How to test Temp sending unit?

I don't know if my temp sending unit has correct temp coming from it or if it is my gauge that is not registering correct temp?

how to test gauge?

Put the sender in a pot on the stove with a baking thermometer, crank the heat up then compare the baking thermometer to your gauge. is it electric or mechanical?

or a cheap laser thermometer...point it in the area of where your sender is mounted. I guess the block would be the same temp as the water??

Grounding it will only tell you if it is sending a signal to the gauge, it will tell you nothing about registering the correct temperature.
