alternator wiring question

i replaced my old one with one from gbg my old who knows who did that mess.question is at the alt there are two connectors on the harness one is batt the other an orange wire with a boot is this field or stator if its field i guess i found my problem.what is stator used for and do i use it.i should have labled things....

stator goes to the choke or the coil cant remember. Probably the choke as the wiring dia viper put up.
