Wheels spin, drive shaft doesn't?

Trying to figure out my driveline problem so I put the rear up on jackstands. I can spin the rear wheels (they spin opposite one another cuz its open diff) and the drive shaft doesn't spin. Is that typical. If I spin one wheel hard, the driveshaft spins for a little bit and then stops easily while the wheels keep turning.. I thought the drive shaft should spin all the time your rear wheels were spinning. I can let it down and try and turn the D-Shaft and it won't turn by hand. Let me know.

Thanks,

Blue71

It's called an open differential. Try and stop one wheel with a wheelchuck and spin the other, your driveshaft will now turn. In a locker or a tight limited slip, both tires will turn the same direction.

One tire traveling forward X MPH. Other tire moving backward same X MPH. Forward + same backward (negitave speed) = 0 MPH. yep, its right.
