If it's a '98 F150 it will be a 5.4L or a 4.6L. Both would be way to wide.

Here is a pic of the 5.0 and 4.6 side by side... just an idea why it is too big...

I got the pic off a post by 45acp (thanks)

To swap one of these you need a lot of money, some fabrication skills, and a bit of time... ;)
Thanks. That aint even close. I guess its a no brainer that that engine wont be coming home with me. I appreciate the research.

Books show the 351 lived to '97. That wold have been in the F250/350 until the superduty came out.
The 302 lived until at least '00 or '01 depending on which reference you check. That is the source of the late model explorer 5.0 swap that has the nice accessory drives on the front.
I bet you can still get brand new engines in either size for marine applications.

As for the '98 F150, it could also have a 4.2 V6. While not great the bellhousing is the same as the 302. The auto behind those is a 4R70W which makes for a nice swap.

5.8L is a 351
5.0L is a 302

I can garuantee it's not a 351 or a 302. It has to be a 4.6L or a 5.4L if it's original.

5.8 = 351W
5.4 = big brother to the 4.6 which the 98 F150 could come with either.
Ive not looked at it but i guess ill pass on it this time. Thanks. Flash

If it is a '98 F250 or 350, then it could be a 5.8/351. That would be a good thing

I think ’98 was the last year for the old style trucks. Maybe it was ’97. Then if I am getting the year wrong, so did he.

There is something wrong. Either the engine is wrong (really a 5.4) or the year and/or model is wrong. When someone screws up like this it is often 1 of 2 things. Either he doesn’t know what he has and unloads it cheap. Or he thinks it’s gold and is asking too much.

I think you were right originally. All of the information I've been able to find says the last year of the 5.8 was in 1997.

He told me that it came out of a 97 or 98 and said he thought it was a 98. But i know he said it was a F150.

Off subject, but I have seen a 2001 mercury and explorer with a 5.0L....

What you ought to do is go look at the motor, it will say 5.8 4.6 or 5.4 right on the intake most likely.

Well if you have to chose between taking the bronco out or looking at an engine, you chose wisely! ;D
