How important is this? A friend of mine has a 77 that doesn't have one. My 74 does though. Should I find one to put on his or just leave it off?

Some timing covers don't have room for it. I changed my 72 to serpentine and used the late model timing cover so it wouldn't fit. I went to the dealer to get a different slinger and they said they didn't use them with an 86 Mustang. I have been running without one for several years without a problem.

all it does is keep the crank seal from getting directly hit with oil.

My memory is a bit faded but I believe the Monroe rebuild book says the oil
slinger is pretty much optional. Reuse it after a rebuild / cam install if the
engine already had it, otherwise don't worry about it.
