rubicon run

Ran the Rubicon with a bunch of friends a little over a week ago. Was an awesome trip.

Didn't take very many action shots this trip, but here are a few pics I did take.

Thanks to the guys in the diesel bronco that ran a driveshaft all the way from Rubicon SPrings to Loon lake at night to help Jeff out! And thanks to Brett and Jacob for bringing a driveshaft too!

Wish we could have met up with the bronco crew hanging out at Rubicon Springs. We tried - just too many traffic jams on the trail.

To me, the trail seemed a fair amount more challenging this year than it has in the past. I think a lot of the big buggies are digging things out on some of the stair steps. I'm not complaining - it made for a blast of a run. My ole burro did great. The bit that my son drive he did awesome.

Can't wait to go back!

Thanks for sharing! Really makes me want to get things going on the 74 and get out there.

You have a nice set up Savage.

Cheers.

Thx guys. Yeah we lucked out - weather was great. Poor guys that came in a day before us got soaked from thunderstorms. Its a blast seeing all the other rigs, but I think we will pick a different week next time - when there aren't multiple events going on. I'm guessing we saw 300+ rigs between Wed and Sat. Makes for slow going on the trail at times.

There were a lot of eb's on the trail too. Three in our group; 3-4 in TBP group; like 10 with J. Shrum; and we saw another 5 on the trail. Pretty cool.

Anyone that's never been should definitely make the time. Sierras are perdy, trail is fun and just about everyone you meet is super cool.

That was a nice weekend then. Good for everyone that made it during the good weather, but that made for a pretty crowded trail.
Some summers it's actually pretty hard to find a nice weekend when the trail is not packed like that though. A typical weekday on the other hand, now that's fun like in the old days fun!
At least I hope it still is. Haven't tried it in a few years.

If you ever have the chance to go through from Tue-Thur I would definitely give it a try.
The last time I did that, I kid you not, we were almost the only rigs on the trail for three days. Just us and the lucky few and the Sheriffs it seemed.
And the ones we did meet were even cooler than normal as well!
Probably more relaxed...

I guess I'm just showing my age when I say that our second Rubicon trip we saw fewer than 20 vehicles. On a Fourth of July weekend no less!
And the first time we did the Rubicon was a Memorial Day weekend and we saw 1, yes, ONE(!) other vehicle! A cherry Jeep CJ with a blue and white striped surrey top (lightweight tubular metal frame and flat vinyl "bimini" style cover) complete with the fringe dangling. Looked like they'd borrowed it right out of a Baja resort hotel for the weekend.
Two couples in their late seventies I'd guess, out for a fun day in the mountains. Very cool. Wish I'd stopped wishing them a good rest of the trip and taken some darn pics!

Maybe low population that weekend was due to the snow blocking the path part of the way. Likely just kept those-in-the-know away and let us city folks learn a valuable Sierra lesson.:p
Great lesson though!

Everyone should give it a try. Weekdays if you can, but weekends if you can't.
Just means you get the chance to meet more people and maybe make more friends.

I was in the group with Jim Shrum and Jon & Rhonda (JB Fab) with their diesel Bronco that brought you the drive shaft. We had just made it into Rubicon springs and the caretakers came out and mentioned there was call on the Ham radio about another early bronco back at Buck island that was in need of a drive shaft. Fortunately Kevin had a brand new drive shaft he forgot to return to Tom's while we were there before we headed down so Jon & Tom Dummer left in the diesel Bronco and we later found out when they returned that night you were all the way back near loon lake! Definitely an awesome experience running the Rubicon finally. We hit a thunder / lightening / rain / hail storm when we got to Walker Hill and our group flew through the trail till we got to the little sluice and then we decided to setup camp and dry out. I wore swimming trunks the rest of the trip in anticipation of another storm ;D

Great story BK. Sounds like a LOT of Bronco people had a good time this year.
Makes me want to head over to Pirate to check out the Rubicon thread there to see if there are some additional summer updates too.

This was one of the first trails in a long time where I didn't bring my DSLR and get out and snap photos all day while running around on the trail. So for me this was the best vacation / trail run I've done in a LONG time. My wife snapped a bunch of photos until the battery died on her camera, then from there on it was cell phone cameras till we were done.
