My bronco came with a 1974 302 and 1969 351w. Can I use the flywheel from them to go on the explorer motor?
Thanks
Karl

No.
The imbalance for pre 1981 302 engines and for all 351W engines is 28 ounce.
The imbalance for newer 302 / 5.0 engines is 50 ounce, which would still be 22 ounces out of balance with the earlier flywheel.

Thanks, I’m glad I was reading through the toms bronco parts catalog last night and read there was a difference. Well now I need to find the correct flywheel. Ugh

It can work, if you have the right flywheel with the right pattern drilled into it.

The Explorer was never offered with a flywheel, only a flexplate. Automatic transmission only.

If I went to the junk yard to source a 50oz flywheel, what vehicles should I look at? Short of just buying one from one of the venders which I may just do. To save time.

'82-'96 ('97?) F Series trucks with a 5.0L engine, you can also get those through a regular auto parts store.

Mid 80's is better. has the old style clutch. I don't think the later flywheels are all drilled for the old style clutch.

Has to be a truck flywheel. Car (Mustang) is too small.

My experience has been that new replacement flywheels are Chinese made.

Napa's said that on the flywheel. O'Reilly's is made by Power Torque #NFW1128. It says made in China on the box.

The last one I bought was from WH's, it was American made. But that was when Mark Beck worked there... so that would have been 8 years ago.

Looks like this is the remedy. Thanks Doug.

Fords are pretty simple there; you use a manual transmission starter with a manual transmission or you use an automatic transmission starter with an automatic.
Size of the flywheel does not matter, the bellhousing corrects for that.

The newer year model mini-starters are really good.
