I heard rumors that the stock Bronco hood would not clear the 351W I installed, so I've been keeping an eye out for ideas. The Ranger small pickup with the bulgy, muscular hood grabbed my attention and as (bad) luck would have it, my grand-daughter totaled out my son-in-law's Ranger pick-up, so I grabbed the hood before he scrapped the truck. First I trimmed the sides down, then cut out the middle dimple and started mulling and pondering. Here's where its at.

Should look good when you're done! Just curious, why the zigzag pattern? Strength?

Looks like quality work! Are you going to have a Ram Air function? What mods will you perform to the stock hood? What with the stock support?

Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement! I wish today had gone as well as yesterday, but, ahh, no..... Scoop, you nailed it! I might have known you'd be on top of this with a handle like that! My thought was for strength and also to give a hack welder like me a little more practice and a little more room for error. Started the day bright-eyed and bushy-tailed figuring I'd connect the weld dots. Btw, last pic gives an idea of the Ranger pick up hood sections I removed.

74BroncoCO, nix on the ram air, and I'm really just trying to find my way as I go, so I don't have many answers yet. but I'm thinkin' real hard about putting a pair of eyes looking out from the scoop, like the old mooneyes from way back when the earth was still cooling! My problem today was mostly the flippy-floppy recycled tin cans they build stuff with. Oil canning like crazy. I tried to add a spine, but I think that is not quite the right way to do it. I think I have a better idea to try tomorrow.

Lot of work for a rumor Howard.;) But don't stop!;)
Lots of members have 351's under their stock hoods. Is yours taller with intake and air cleaner stuff? If so then yes you'd have issues. If not, and especially if you have any body lift at all, it should fit just fine.

But nice and unique scoop anyway! For sure keep going no matter what I say 'cause that's going to be a cool unique feature that you custom built yourself. Good conversation starter at car shows and Bronco events for years to come.

I like the idea! Will look good when you are done.

First off, I’m no professional welder, but, from teaching myself to weld I’ve learned a little. Looking at your welds, they are a little proud. They are piled on top of the surface. Play with your settings. Bump the wire feed down a tad and the heat setting too. This should help the weld lay flatter. If you look at the back side make sure the weld penetrates to the back. You should see some slight deformation of the surface. When you tack next to a previous spot, aim the tip to slightly overlap the previous spot. This will make sure there are no voids in the weld. I usually do about 4 or 5 spots together, then move to another area to let it cool. Grind your welds as you go, so you can see any gaps.

Maybe some people with more knowledge than me will chime in. Also YouTube is your friend!

Thanks rspd505, I'l give that a try. Paul, you always have very good things to say. I do have an after market 4bbl intake, Edlebrock Performer I think. I'm going to keep the ball rollin' though I'm not sure where it's rollin' to!

You will forget all the hard times when it is done and you can look out over it everyday and be proud or what you have done! Looking good and I love those hoods too!

Well, I'm learning that the trial and error method is made up mostly of error, at least so far..... Started out un-doing the sins of the past by cutting out the "spine" that I had chicken-scratched in. Probably a good thing that I'm not an ace welder - yet. Plan "B" was to try to use the wind bracing house builders use as corner bracing. I took some pieces cut to length +/- to a sheet metal shop and rolled them into a curve, sort of.

Back on track, maybe. The welds are getting a little bit better, thank you RSPD505, but have a ways to go. I'll keep trying, but I'm glad God created Bondo.

When I started this thread, I had no intention of it being a "how to" piece, more of a this is what I'm monkeyin' with thread, but it's sort of devolved into a "how not to" thread. More backin' up today, but I swear I'm going to finish this thing even if it kills me, and it just might. Got an old scrap hood out of the back 40, thinking if I'm going to cut things up and ruin them, I may as start with a pre-ruined hood. Also got the Plan "B" braces tack welded in. Learning a little more, but a LONG way to go until practice makes perfect. As my lovely bride would say, not perfect, but better.

I cut a relief notch in the hood because I wasn't getting the curve I was hoping for, and inserted a filler piece which was another goof that ended up in the scrap barrel.%)

Thanks Broncowie, I needed that! Believe me, I am having a ball, but the two steps forward, three steps back is become a little frustrating.....

This is where it was at until it wasn't there anymore. I decided to try to clean things up a little by cutting out some chicken scratches and trying to re-shape more to my liking. Stay tuned, I'm still not dead, yet........
