They do, but so does a Carbon pile. The problem is the resistance & voltage drop through the cast Iron, which increases slowly over time. Running a clean Copper wire from the clean Aluminum casting (you did clean it, right?) directly to the battery terminal minimizes the resistance & voltage drop, keeping the battery fully-charged without elevating the system voltage.
