This is the second incarnation of trying to rebuild this ButtStank Bronco. I'm in determined mode.

Why a new name?
As it was known as The Obscure Machine, which is the old name of all the ButtStank on it - It needs a new name. But now my goal is Daily Driver. And, In the Bible, when someone received a calling, many times they were given a new name (Jacob to Israel, Simon to Peter, Saul to Paul, Abram to Abraham). So the Obscure Machine will be receiving a new name. Not sure what yet. But the build is now "Project Redemption"

1974 (not 73 Dennis!!!) 302, C-4

Work previously done before it was parked 4+ years ago.

  • 23 gallon metal fuel tank
  • new fuel line
  • Carter electric fuel pump
  • Edelbrock Performer Intake
  • Edelbrock Performer 500cfm Carb
  • H4 headlights
  • Front parking light lenses
  • Tail light lenses
  • Gauge cluster overlay (that quit working 4 months later)
  • Hedman headers
  • Flowmaster mufflers
  • Pipes exiting out each side behind rear tires
  • Front disc brake conversion
  • Power brake booster and master cylinder
  • Pertronix igniter
  • MSD coil
  • New wires and hoses
  • Saginaw PS pump
  • Tom's Bronco Steering Wheel
  • Actually bolted the seats in

  • New Tie Rod and ends
  • New drag link

  • 2" Body Lift
  • Warn Locking Hubs

  • Destroyed the rusted hard top trying to make a safari top
  • Rebuilt the carb twice (from sitting without running for long periods of time)
  • Installed several security / anti-theft devices
  • Installed a Sea Blue Fuse Block for extra circuits.
  • New Driver Floor pan
  • Rewired most of the engine compartment
    • AND THE BEST MOD EVER! HOOD SHOCKS!!!

That's all I can remember

recent work

What's been done in the last three weeks:

  • Replaced ball joints
  • Proportioning valve
  • All new SS brake lines from prop valve back
  • completely rebuilt rear brakes (haven't been touched in probably 20 years)
  • LOUD air truck horn mounted to inner fender
  • New F-series coolant tank and washer reservoir
  • Finally mounted upper seat belt harness
  • pulled the oil pressure switch for the fuel pump (inertia switch instead)
  • bought 2 fire extinguishers (can never have enough)
  • Found an inch of bondo between the "floor pan" where the Pass seat mounts and the actual floor pan
  • Bled entire brake system (ewwww........fluid was gross)
  • Got it out of the garage and under a huge tent behind the garage (Garage is way too small and plus it's my woodworking shop.)
  • removed the "OBSCURE" license plate. :(

Put the Mustang up for sale

Next Post - What's coming up

Next few Steps

  • Install new Tom's Battery tray and hold-down
  • New Tires- BFG A/T 33x12.5x15
  • Remove everything possible for sandblasting the interior floors
  • Replace Passenger floor pan
  • Sand blast all the denno Liner in the interior
  • Line-X interior
  • Bronco Bob full cage
  • Remount front seats.
  • BCB Soft Top
  • inertia switch
  • Neutral safety switch

  • Following That (Goals)

  • Centech Wiring
  • Serpentine conversion
  • EFI (Probably Holley Sniper)
  • New Radiator
  • Custom Dash
  • Dakota VHX gauge cluster
  • Pull style hand brake
  • New back seat (roll and tumble? Stop drop and roll?)
  • New springs, shocks and bushings

  • A/C

And the list goes on....

Level out the body lift

When I put the 2" body lift 4 years ago, I shimmed here and there (a lot in places) to try to make panels fit better. All I did was make the whole body catawampas and give it a lean to the passenger side.

Today I am removing excess shims and doing proper measuring and re-bolting the body down. Then I have to figure out door fitting.

And I removed the rear seat.

Note:
1. I love my hood shocks!
2. I will NEVER, EVER, again own an Edelbrock Carb.

1. Hood shocks are the greatest inexpensive mod ever.
2. My edelbrock has performed excellently since I installed it 10 years ago, but I don't do any aggressive off-road driving.

You should name it Febreeze since you're getting rid of the buttstank issues.

Tore the carb apart, soaked in in carb cleaner and let it soak overnight. Rebuilt it and slapped it on the bronco. While it was soaking, decided to start doing some engine "detailing."

Not sure why that engine pic keeps uploading sideways. Sorry.

First oregon road trip!!!

Well, it was only 3 miles, but.............. IT'S ALIVE!!!!

It starts up immediately, idles great, runs amazingly well!

Needs tires and an alignment b/c it's all over the road, but other than that, it's on the move!
