Anyone build their own gas tank?

Has anyone built or modified a vendors gas tank? I want to build or buy a 16-18 gallon SS tank set up for either internal or external fuel pump or carb. Maybe I’m expecting too much from a tank. A 23 gallon tank was too big for me on my 76. I’d go almost a year before filling it back up bc I didn’t drive it that often. Plus it hangs down a lot in the back even after adjusting the height to my 20 body lift.

Ive contacted Aero and they only do mild steel tanks. I contacted a restomod tank fabricator and they want just a little less that $2k. I spoke to a well respected builder and he no longer builds his own tanks now that WH has a SS 23 gal Sherman tank.

Does anyone have a good reputable fabricator that can build me a tank? I’d almost build one out of cardboard and transfer the numbers to SS or aluminum. I’m curious if anyone has gone down this path of hardship like I’m doing.

I split a stock tank around the middle and added 6" depth to it. Used POR 15 fuel tank sealer rather than fighting finding and fixing leaks. I used the fuel pump hole off an explorer tank in the top and added some length to the fuel pump assembly so it'd work in the new tank. I'm quite proud of myself. ;D

Here's pics I downloaded from my facebook thread from Early bronco drivers group. I had to build new top mounting brackets to put it in. Then after taking it to LEBC roundup '17, I decided that it needed a skidplate. (Note also where my exhaust comes out. :) I haven't had tail pipe get bent since then...)

I just had an aluminum one custom built in MO. Guy also does stainless. Fit perfect although it does have a leak at a weld but I have a change to make so I’ll have him fix the weld and make my change.

Bill,
How big was that tank? It looks to be 30 gallons! What is the height of that tank? I’d like one like that bc I plan to run a 2” bodylift so having it tucked up an inch is perfect.

I thought they would have baffles in those old tanks. It appears not. I’ve never looked inside a vendors tank.

I can't see where baffles would be needed on a 13 gallon tank that's only 12" or so tall... Probably wouldn't have been a bad idea to put in mine either. And I may have thought about it, but decided not to?

LOL..looks can be deceiving. It's 14" deep and 22 gallon capacity. I'm only planning to run 1" BL on that one.

There is a 2" deep sump enclosure in the center/bottom where the in-tank pump suction filter sits.

There was a person here that built a beautiful SS tank a while back...can't seem to find it though.

You might give (Bronco) Bob a call at All-4-Fun Off Road in Albany, OR. He was making stainless steel tanks for a while and may still be making them. He's always been good about tweaking things for customers IMO.

Duffymahoney designed and built a stainless tank (or had it built- not sure)
http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=259028

Duffy was one of those I spoke with. He welded it all up himself. His tank is bad azz! Here is the list of parts Duffy used. I contacted Ricks Tanks who Duffy bought his sending unit from. Hector responded to my email and now wants $1600 (earlier it was less than $2k) and I think that includes fuel pump or sending unit. I asked Hector to break down the price of the custom SS tank and price of the pump.

I never heard back from Drew. Will try again. I’ve contacted All 4 Fun and awaiting their response. I’ve looked at the SS one at Wild Horse but I’d prefer a bolt on instead of a strap. I suppose I hold tig on some mounts but SS tends to warp if it’s too thin. Decisions decisions.
