Hi Everyone..

The 302 in my ‘77 is doing ok- but, Im considering rebuilding her, or putting in a new 302 all together. Obviously, there are a ton of crate motors out there. Anyone have any suggestion of a company they’ve bought one from that they reccomend??

I was going to rebuild my 351w but $3200 from a machine was was a little steep. So I called Oreilly, and got a quote for a rebuilt motor. $1700 and a three year warranty. That’s the route I’m going when I get it to that point.

If I had to choose now I would get the BluePrint engines 5.0 HO Crate Engine for $1799 + free shipping at Summit (BPF3021C) or Jegs.

I was going to buy one earlier last summer but I thought the three week wait to receive one was too long and that I'd rebuild my engine before that. Of course it took three more months to rebuild my engine...so I was completely off the mark there.

I did use the BluePrint break-in oil though. It's blue, easy to spot leaks. :)

If you have a fat bank account, Fordstrokers.com. But there's a 9 month wait.

Those lame Geico commercials say it all "More" I would pop for the 1500$ delta and go the 351w route, put it together from a short block and save some of that, save the rest somewhere else (paint it a year from now, run on bald tires, drink cheaper beer for awhile etc)

I would always shop around locally first for an engine builder as you will have much better luck with any warranty issues etc. You should be able to get one done if you are staying stock around 1500 with new pistons, rings and bearings. As a few others stated, it would be a great time to find a better set of heads, E7's are big improvement over the stock bronco stuff and they can be had cheap, then I would look to GT40's and all the way up to aluminum if your budget allows. The other big factor to tend with here is do a new cam. You can switch to a roller cam, Comp has kits available with everything you need to upgrade your motor or you can grab a new flat tappet cam. One issue I do not like about the big engine crate builders is you never know what you are getting internally, I have seen Jasper type motors with mix matched bores, as they only addressed what they needed to etc. I have heard good things about blueprint but have no personal experience with them as we use a local machine shop for ours.

Ive got a 408w from ATK - put an explorer SERP and some wh headers and giddy up. Installed in 15 and runs like a top. So far so good. Its hard to find a perfect vendor / builder - there are trade offs. For the money - I’m happy with my choice.

Buy what you can afford and fits what you want - nobody ever complained with too much power.

Tnk

I always have mine built locally. 302s, 347s and 351Ws. I bring all the parts and they build it.

I have a good relationship with them and they ALWAYS make it right. One faulty Rocker stud, but nothing else has ever had to be returned.

I went with the Blueprint 331 with aluminium heads. Putting an Edelbrock 5.0 EFI on top of it. But that will bolt on to a complete new drivetrain.

Ive heard Phoenix Engines are also good.

I have heard not such great stuff about Phoenix.
Not first hand experience but was warned away from them more than once.

I have a 350 HP 302 Phoenix crate engine in my 69EB. I bought it new (not started) from a second owner on Ebay. Phoenix was very helpful when I called them with the build number with questions. The engine runs great. I'm building a 71EB driver now and will not hesitate to call them when ready for the next engine.

Nice! I have a 322hp 302 w/Fitech Randy built from my block, sitting on my roller. I flew out and watched the runoff. Was pretty impressed and Have high hopes! I planned to promote them here after its on the road. I will know more this summer and will post feedback.
