What is the best oil drain plug and gasket to use on the 302?.. I ALWAYS have a little leak haha.. I've tried many, but can't seem to figure it out. They all work good for a week or two and then I get the little leak ;D

Use a soft copper washer between the pan bolt and the pan. make sure your pan bolt has a flange head. If you still have an issue take a copper washer and hang it by a wire and heat it up on your gas stove at home until it is really hot. Don't force cool it off, just let it cool on its own. This will anneal the copper to a dead soft state and make it easier to compress the washer. We use to have issues with leaky banjo bolt washers when they were made with too hard of copper washers so we used this method to solve the problem.

Take a look at how the bolt tightens into the pan with out the washer and make sure it contacts the surface flat and square when the bolt head gets to the surface of the pan hand tight. Maybe something has been bent out of square or a replacement over size bolt has been screwed in crooked.

Thanks, I actually haven't tried a copper washer yet. I've been using the plastic ones from auto zone and they suck.

I don't like plastic washers because if they crack and go unnoticed you have a problem. They also wont pull a bolt and the pan square if they are crooked they just mash in on one side.

These solved my oil leak. At least the one at the drain plug. Lol

The rubber in the middle has a little bit of an interference fit and I had to kinda screw it on the drain plug almost all the way. It's a little fatter than the outside so it seals when tightened down.

Steel needs to cool slowly when annealing.

Copper and brass can be quenched in water after heating and will still be soft.

Grab this box from Harbor Freight. For $5.00 it is good to have around in the shop. I've done my 9" rear(3/8"),intake manifold(5/16"), brake caliper hoses, and oil pan plug with this kit.

If I have issues .. I just park over the sand pit.
Sorry just had to go there. But I'll put about 3 wraps of White Teflon Tape on mine .. Teflon seems to fix most of my leaks .

That's pretty cool steeve, but it looks like it hangs kinda low. probably awesome for the street, but maybe not for 4x4ing up rocks

That's pretty impressive, then: getting a rock big enough to dent the pan up that close behind the axle & between the radius arms/d'shaft! ;)

But if the pan has rock scars like that, a rubber sealing washer isn't really going to prevent it leaking oil anyway, is it? %)
