I am in the build phase still but I got my zf5 and 351w for 1300.. bought a 88f250. Bolted up a np205 so no adaptors.

I dont want a fast truck for the street being that I am lifted.

If I was stock with 302.. nv3550 would be my choice.

Another vote for ZF5. I did like Ethansdad73. I bought a 1990 F250 for $1500 with a ZF and 351W. The engine and tranny were in great shape. I run 35's and 4.88's. I could not be happier. I wheel my bronco and I love the granny gear off road, and I love the overdrive on the highway. It might shift more truck like than a light duty transmission, but it is night and day better shifting than an NP435.

I love my ZF. I’m running 38s (37.5) with 5.13 gears. 1st is great off road and taking off on small hills. Overdrive is perfect for the highway.

I will second the NV4500 the ability to crawl and run 70 mph comfortably. I'm running 36" tires and 4.88 gears. You can normally find one around 900 bucks. Other nice thing is if you ever want to go to an Atlas 2 they bolt up no adapters needed.

Light duty: AX15, NV3550, M50D
Heavy Duty: ZF5 & NV4500

AX/3550 are cheap, length pretty much stays the same. downside the adapters are expensive and need clutch parts

M5OD/ZF uses same clutch parts but is longer and requires driveshaft modifications and hyd setup. np205 or dana 20 adapter.

NV4500 requires adapter for ford bell housing, input shaft is larger so you'll need all new clutch parts and then tcase. Honestly dont know what case it comes with as whatever trans i went with i planned to go dana 20; so tcase adapter aswell.

I like the non truck feel of the lighter duty options but running a 4BT left me with two choices. I couldn't find a NV4500 so i went with a ZF. Bought a Low mileage truck that sat for 5 years prior due to a bad slave cylinder. amongst fixing a bunch of issues (electrical, brakes/lines, broken spring hangers, starter, and fuel tank) and replacing the ZF in the truck with an M5OD (obviously buyer was made aware) had i gone Np205 I would've made money on the swap

Really just comes down to what it'll be used for and how much money you are willing to put into it to get one more gear.

I have looked at the ZF as an option too, if money were no object it would be a rather great choice, the 3000$ bogey is a deal breaker for me. Also hard to think of 4.88 gears as 'too high' but with a 37" tire you run and assume it has a 36" true diameter and the OD gear at 0.76 you will end up going 65 mph in OD at an engine speed of 2251 rpm. Others may have better opinions than mind but that could potentially be too low of an rpm for a stock 302 to pull very hard. If you like a white knuckle drive you could ease it up to 75 mph and turn a motor at 2600 rpm. A gear change to 5.13 will help , but not a huge improvement. I too have 4.88 and plan on 35" tires that might measure 34" in reality and that 0.76 OD doesn't put my 65 mph engine speed much better. At the end of the day if you cant fully use the OD then that NP435 is pretty indestructible. Depends on how much high way running you anticipate. the ZF can be found to bolt to a sbf, just adapt to tcase of choice
ZF S-42 OR ZF S-47 what's the difference is one better than the other? I need a small block bolt pattern

S-42 is rated for up to 420 ft/lbs of torque.

S-47 is rated for up to 470 ft/lbs of torque. (it is the newer improved model)

The same bolt pattern used for the small block V8 is used for the 300 inline six and the 4.2L V6.

Okay so I purchased a S42 out of a one ton truck with a 351. Of course it was supposed to be a 47 but wasn't. So my question is can I make the 42 stronger? Should I be stressing about this? Where's the best place to buy internals if needed?

I know the case is different. That would be enough to stop me from trying.

Being German, the torque rating is probably in N-M.
Also remember that a transmission can handle more torque in higher gears. The output torque isn't as high and the output torque in low gear is the highest stress.

I've know the ZF to live behind built stroker big blocks is full sized trucks. Behind a small block (even a built stroker) in a Bronco I wouldn't worry about it.

From what I have read elsewhere ZF is quite conservative in their rating and the real amount it will handle is at least 15% higher.
I have lost the link to where I read that.

Okay I'm just nervous about not having a 47. I run a np435 now and really need another gear for highway. I also know the granny 1st gear is lower in the 47.

Everything I have ever seen says that the gas versions of both are geared exactly the same. Only the diesel versions are different.

The Z4 I got has a decent first gear ratio. I'm losing my Np 435 but gaining a synchro transmission. And the 5th gear will be a dream on the highway for me.

I have a NV3550 and it is the limiting factor for more horse power to be added . I am thinking about a C4 as they hold up behind 550 HP LS in Twisted Customs Cars .
