So, while everyone is having fun at OCBR I thought I'd start a couple upgrade projects. Ram assist steering and a new harness. First step is getting access to everything by pulling the front clip and skins.

Next step is removing the steering box and getting it sent to West Texas Offroad. Then pull the dash to get to the wring harness.

This will not be a build thread exactly but I thought I'd document the process and get some feedback where needed. I've already got some good advice from ransil on the harness installation - thanks Randy!

Are you going to run a Redneck Ram, PSC or something else?

I talked to both WTO (Redneck Ram) and PSC. Both seem to be good companies but I decided to go with the Redneck Ram. Still undecided how to mount it.

If you bend a shaft you cant get a replacement from West Texas. They would only sell me a new ram. PSC sells replacement shafts.

Now to start the wiring harness installation. The wiring is a mess after about 15 years of adding and then deleting different electrical items (lights, fuel pumps, electric fans, CBs, compressors, etc.!).

I'll just leave this here.

There is a plan!! LOL

I shipped the steering box to West Texas on Friday afternoon. It got there Monday - yesterday. Work is done and it's back to UPS for shipping to me! Unbelievably quick turnaround. Wow!

More than unbelievable! I was thinking I'd have to send mine there because it's having trouble turning right on the trails. Sunday morning while loading up, I found the 2 week old steering stabilizer had been crushed.... So now, how bad do I need hydro assist???? GAH!! Too many choices in life.

Having recently installed ram assist on my '78..I wish I'd done it years ago. I knew that was probably going to be the case though..

Gary,
Here is how I mounted mine with a TRO steering linkage and a riser. Make sure you make the lines as long as you can. I had to replace my lines when I found out they were not long enough to flex out.
According to PSC you want to hemi joints on the ram to be on the same plane.
