Tire carrier finished, OK or overkill?

heres a few pictures of my tire carrier I finally finished welding up. there is actually quite a bit of flex in the protofab rear bumper, so I flipped over the reciever hitch and added a spacer for the tire to rest on. It was a pain in the butt getting a jack to fit in there and still have it all fit tight to the tailgate. I really did not want the jack anywhere else. what do you guys think of it?

I like it! Especially how it kinda wraps around the tire. And how the Jack is protected and out of sight.

I like it. It's always great when you can build your own bumpers or tire carrier. Can you post some pics with the tire swung out?

I concur with he others - very nice design. As to "overkill", it's plenty stout, that's for sure!!

I don't think there's any such thing as overkill when you're trying to stabilize a tire that size on limited anchoring surfaces (the frame) so adding beef and the upside-down ball mount to help support it and reduce the rocking motions that are natural for a thing like that is a great idea.

What size tire is that? Looks like at least a 35. And that ain't no slouch in the weight department.
Overkill is just enough...

Looks like it will work well with that size of tire. Nice job. What color are you planning on painting it? Ken

I have the ProtoFab rock solid bumper with their tire carrier on my FSB.
They gusseted inside the bumper, back to the passenger frame rail. There is very little to no flex of the bumper.

Nice job on your carrier. A gusset or plate along the back would probably help the flexing.
Your Bronco rocks! Love the color.

thanks for all the compliments guys, and for not publicly poking fun at my work. I will post more pictures tomorrow of the back side and what holds the jack it place. There actually is a provision to lock the whole thing. will show that too. Paul the tire is a 35 and it is heavy. the whole deal lowered the back end 1". and the ball mount also made it a lot easier to throw that sucker up there and line it up on the studs.
If I was doing it again I would probably gusset the bumper ends to frame, but at this point it is what it is. gonna do a little finish work on it and powder coat it black.

Here ya go. the foot of the jack is bolted to a plate that is welded to the tire carrier through two factory holes in the jack foot. the long end is bolted to the carrier upright, a 3/4 thick piece of steel indexes into the beam of the jack. After powder coating, I will probably put a stud in the threaded hole and nylock nut to match the two on the foot. all three are 1/2 - 13.

I had to notch the upright next to the jack foot to clear the jack mechanism in order to get the jack centered over the tire carrier horizontal beam and far enough away from the tailgate.

The bolt that holds the carrier closed is a 5/8 - 18 bolt with a T welded onto it. about 1/2" of threads have been machined off the end and a hole drilled through it for a safety clip to keep it from rattling out or a small lock to secure it.

The more of the way it is built I see the more I like it, and I started out liking it from your first post.
