Here is the green '76 Explorer in Tennessee. It will be a part of our corral soon.
It is an old metal electrical box cover covering up a hole the PO had cut. Not sure what it was for but there were lights, speakers, switches, extra cigarette lighters, more speakers, more lights all over it.
There's several pictures of '76 Explorers on this thread, so I'm adding my original paint '76 called medium copper....

Could very easily have been for an old CB whip antenna mount. The big spring thingies with the round plastic base would need a hole probably about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter maybe?
Sometimes you'd see dual antennas on the side of the hard tops.
Sounds like your Bronco's PO was just the kind of guy to have communications of some kind all mounted up and ready to talk.
