Recently bought a rig with no hood, thought it had a hi rise intake but doesn’t look much higher than a standard manifold with 2 barrel I have laying around.

You guys think I’d be ok with a standard hood?

I also am gonna say no. don't forget to cut the air cleaner stud down before you try it so you don't ding the bottom of your hood.

There is no added value in the GM style HEI distributors. It's a good time upgrade to a Durespark II ignition. The old Shelby style F4B intake won't do anything for you either. An Edelbrock performer sits low enough for a stock hood with the right carb spacer. The stock steel hood is less problematic than fiber glass.

Rather go with a different hood you might want to do a body lift. Hood mounts to the body, engine to the frame. An inch or two may be enough.

^^^^ I'm with crush. Just get a lower air cleaner. I prefer the hei dizzy and would just notch the hood brace. The 1" body lifts are nice.

no hood?? ouch. finding a hood and getting it to fit correctly will involve as much work as installing a 1" body lift. Id skip the glass hood though unless you have other glass body parts already. Worse case secenerio you cut a hole in the hood and rivet down a residential roof vent.

change the dizzy and get a drop base air cleaner or a stock bronco air cleaner

Thanks folks, think I will find a stock air cleaner, seems like I saw one just this week around here somewhere...really prefer not to replace dizzy or intake because engine runs outstanding as is...bought the air cleaner yesterday just because it had nothing, ill just take it back

Good to know about the hood install, will probably do 1" BL anyway, install stock air cleaner and go from there. They did knock off $300 once they 'realized' there was no hood ;)

Hey Jeff you can use my old yellow hood to test fit that will let you know how much lift you need

Thanks Tom! I will definitely take you up on that offer. I actually road tested it yesterday, really ran good especially considering the PO left the painted spark plugs installed %)

I drove it a couple blocks over to visit Boone (JaBr73) would have headed to your house but, you know, it's got no tail lights for starters...I'm thinking it could use a new radiator though ;D

PS anyone got a pic of their 302 dipstick? This engine has the hole in the side of the oil pan, just like my 170, but I don't see how to route a dipstick to it. IIRC my Mustang, which also had a 68 302 had a dipstick that entered the crankcase just below the alternator bracket...

Oh yeah and I put the meter on it while running and it read 12.2V, so I figure bad alternator (it looks older than anything else) then looked to the left, no voltage regulator

1strodeo - Your 302 with a high rise intake and a drop base air cleaner will fit just fine under a stock hood. Change out the HEI distributor and you are good there too.

Those HEI distributors look really out of place on a Ford anyways. A Duraspark would be a worthy replacement.

Was this an original 6 cylinder truck? The pictures sure make the engine look forward a bunch. It seems in my Bronco the valve covers are much closer to the firewall. If the engine is much more forward than stock that will make the HEI and the hood brace a bigger problem. I don't embrace the HEI distributor. Its an awkward solution to a problem that didn't exist.

Thanks guys, sounds like a Duraspark swap is in order, I know it's easy I did it on my 170, cost me $40 I think, but IIRC I may have gotten the best of what was left at my favorite yard.

I dunno Rusty, still haven't talked to the guy that had been restoring it, per the VIN it's a 302 rig. Here's a pic I borrowed from BajaFresh75's Ranger he has for sale, could be the Cobra valve covers making it look like more space? Cowl has a much bigger cutout too...
