I know this has been discussed a hundred times and i tried the search function but didn't pull what I was looking for. So here goes, for clarification is the 98 5.0 4x4/AWD Explorer the best donor vehicle when looking for a 4r70w? with a follow up question being if i can't find one of those locally what would be some follow up year models and vehicle to look for a 4r70w from. Sorry to bog down the forum with re dundant info but this is an expensive piece and don't want to make the wrong decision. Thanks

The 1998 that was the first year of the stronger ones not the only year.
'99, '00, '01 also work.

A 96 or 97 4R70W can be retrofitted with the mechanical diode and later reverse drum for about $125 in parts. If you plan to rebuild it in any case take that into account.

And don't overlook the Mercury Mountaineer in your search criteria.

Found a 4r70w trans on FB marketplace. Says it came out of 4x4 F150 with 66,000 miles and will fit 97-2003 model. Any hidden reasons why this model trans won't built up to my 351w and an atlas?

The 97-03 F150 had modular engines. Different bell housing pattern. However, if you can find a 4wd trans from an explorer or 96-earlier f150/bronco that is known to need rebuilt, the internals should swap out to give you a small block trans with later model internals.

What engine did that F150 have?
1997 would be too late for a Small Block Ford in an F150 and the modular engines do not have the same bellhousing bolt pattern, so unless it had a 4.2L V6 it will not work for you.
