Anyone ever put an automatic behind a 6 cylinder? I have a customer asking me if its possible. What parts are involved and how difficult is it? Mark in San Diego. Beach City Broncos.

Not sure about using a c4 auto behind a 200 6 cylinder from a Mustang? You would need the 6 cylinder C4 because bell housing and flywheel are different. That would have been an option in at least 1967-1968. Fitting the Bronco specific adapter for the D20 to the transmission might be the only issue.

I looked at this 7 years ago on a 66 I had. As I remember you need to source a 200ci 6 cyl out of a Fairlane of the era with a c4 and it should bolt to the d20. Best bet is probably find the 200, then source the c4 out of trany rebuild shops which have one on the shelf for years.

Or a 250, the one I picked up had a C4 behind it in a fairmont wagon.

I don't think you would want to have an auto behind a 170, the hp and rpm loss would be a lot on that little 6. I'd be thinking 250 or 300 if I wanted an auto, although a 200 can be built up too.

For performance a 250 is better. It has the sbf v8 bh pattern. Check out fordsix.com.

It's been done. The hard parts to find are a C4 bellhousing that will bolt up to the six and the case-fill C4 to go behind it. I highly recommend a '70 and later C4. The output shaft and adapter are easy to find. This will move the tcase back a couple inches so driveshaft mods are required.

Yep, my bad 250, not a 200.

If I had a spare bronco with a 6 cyl laying around, I'd do it for city use mall crawl/parts runner duty.

My Friend just so happens to have a 200 and tranny out of a Falcon for sale. The 200 had a blow through turbo set up on it. He pulled it to drop a 300 in the falcon with fitech and a bigger turbo. I think he pulled it because the trans couldn't handle the boost. I debated getting his 200 with the turbo set up to put in my bronco.

Anyways, I guess the point is I think he has a c4 bell housing for a 200 and maybe more than once since he went through a couple transmissions.

six with aod automatic

An AOD should bolt up to a 250 if that would interest you. Or an AODE. But your tire size and gearing would be a crucial factor.

I remember seeing a 250/7R70W combo in a Bronco many years ago.

The thing to remember is the bellhousing is further back on the I6 (it is a longer engine). With the 3-speed they made up for that with a short tail housing. You are not going to get a short automatic, they will all be longer then the 3-speed you are looking at taking out. This will push the transfer case back. And the associated driveshaft work that will have to go with it.

Hi Mark,

I picked up a C4 bellhousing, flexplate/converter from a 65 Falcon and bolted them to a 78 Fairmont C4 rebuilt with a used EB tailshaft/ adapter housing and it slipped right in. The T case crossmember did need an inch or so rearward relocation but my driveshaft still fit fine YMMV.

Changed the Bronco entirely, made it real easy to drive. The little 200 scooted around great with 4.11's! Still wishing we never sold that one...
