Trail rig for Memorial weekend! Now Project "El Bronco Loco"

After frigid cold weeks followed by record snowfalls on the weekends.
I'm taking a break from a restoration project on a '76.
And will try and put a trail rig together for Memorial weekend.
I have most of the parts needed. Now I just need good luck with the weather.
It's a '73 with a 302, automatic and power steering.
Here is a before picture and a concept drawing!

The transformation begins!
Today the weather was good!
Removed all the nuts and bolts that hold down the top.
Took off the factory spare tire carrier.
Removed taillights.
Went at it with the cutoff wheel and removed the drivers side front fender lip.
Cut open the drivers side rocker panel( not alot off good metal there)

Hope the weather is good tomorrow!;D

Looks like a fun project. What are the rest of the specs? Lift? Tires? Winch? Gearing? Lockers?

How are you cutting the rears? Looks like your raising the stock body lines?

Man your moving right along. Where are all the goodies? Are you going to build some rock ski's or just leave the body line that high?

I will be running 35x12.50x15 BFG Mud Terrain tires on 15X10 wheels.
I have a Dana44 from a '76, disc brakes with a chevy short side axel and a modified Ford 150 axel for the long side. Factory limited slip with a tightened up clutch pack & 4.10 gears. The rear is a 9" Ford with 4.10 gears a full Locker, 31 spline with moser axels and disc brakes, I have a 3" suspension lift and plan to make a 2" body lift. I have a spower steering box from a '76 - 4 turn and a frame strengthing kit from BC Broncos. The stock inverted Y tie rod set-up from a '76 will be used until it no longer functions then it will be changed. The motor is a Jasper rebuilt 302, Holley Projection, performer manifold, competition cam, shorty headers. The transmission is stock as is the Dana 20 transfer case. I have a Duffs twin stick shifter. Fuel comes from a 23 gallon tank. I have a 1/2 cab internal roll cage from COR. And plan to make a roll cage for the back.
Seats from a Datsun 280z will keep me planted behind the wheel. I plan to make rock skis that the roll cage will connect to and tie into the frame. The rear lower quarter panels will have a 5 1/2" section cut out then raised for tire clearance and less rust repair. If needed I will lengthen the wheel opening too.
I want to keep the classic fender look.;)

Progress

Finally had a decent day to work on the Bronco. I jacked it up in the air so I could see how the tires would look and fit like. Then I got out the surgical tools and cut the driver side lower rear quarter panel out. I cut 5 1/2" out of the panel and tacked it into place. I'm going move the front of the wheel opening 2" closer to the striker post and put a patch panel in the center of the wheel opening, It looks like it will be to close to the tire.

Got a few more things done this weekend. Cut the passenger side front fender, the rocker panel and the rear lower quarter panel. Put in the 2" body lift. It's now on the tires with no jackstands! Still have a 3" suspension lift to install. The bummer of the weekend is to find a 1/2" deep puddle of Body filler in the center of the quarter panel:cry: Went to town with a wire brush to the floor and rusted areas. The doorpost and stricker post are in bad shape.
I fabbed up some sheet metal rocker covers! It helped but with out rocker panels and the rusted posts it sure is flimsy. Put in adjustable struts from the dash to the rear quarters to keep the doors aligned. Dug out the front and rear diffs. Next up repair the drivers side floor pan. Go thru the diffs and put in suspension lift and diffs.

How have I missed this for so long?

I like what you're doing, and the concept is kick ass.

Good for you keeping the uncut look. I love how the lower corners turned out in back, very trick.

Keep up the good work, and keep up with the pics!;D

Well this weekend I put in a new drivers side floor. Took out the newer Centech wiring harness. I decided to use a mustang floor shifter. I'm extending the tunnel cover back for a good flat area to mount the shifter.
So I designed a pattern for the sheet metal on my computer. I then plotted it onto paper, cut the paper with a razor knife the bent it to shape and stapeled it together now I'll take it to work and cut and fab one out of sheet metal!
I got some of those white gauge overlays%) I should of used a heat gun to apply them got a wrinkle at 40mph and a bubble at 0 that won't lay down. Think I'll paint the black part silver and then decide if it looks good!

How far around did you cut on the rear post in order to bring it up the 5.5"? You have a pic of the inside of the quarter panel?

I measured down from the seam where the upper and lower panels meet.
Then drew a line across the lower panel. For the rear post I took a close look at the opening of the tail light and tried to cut the 5.5" out of the center. But I really wanted the top and bottom to match up so it would'nt look to hacked.
I used a cutoff wheel for the panel and a sawzall for the rear post.
I don't have any pics of the inside of the rear quarter.
