What color is your Bronco?

"What color is it?" or "What color was it originally?"

These questions come up a lot and I didn't see a particular page dedicated to the answer. I was just thinking it would be nice to have a post to refer to for an easy reply instead of looking at pictures and guessing

Here's a pic of a 1968 - 1973 VIN tag (others are similar):



Look to the letter or number by where it says COLOR.
In this case it is "J"
Next refer to a list of colors and find your year and letter or number.
Below I have made a list in case you can't find one.
By using this list you'll see that "J" refers to Rangoon Red.

I copied these from a color book at the paint shop and they are for Ford trucks in general and probably not all were used for Broncos.
I did leave out colors that were specifically referred to as for vans and trucks only.
I did the best I could making this list but the possibility of errors is there so please offer corrections if you can.

originally rangoon red then at one time blue and now yellow

Original 1969 color was Anti Establish Mint Green....didn't see it in your list. Now Legend Lime...fairly close to the original color.

Orange, then blue, then brown, now a fading red.

I forgot about when you could actually get a selection of colors on new cars. Now you get your choice of 5 colors...

It was Dark Jade Poly, Now its red.Funny thing is I always liked that color . I have pictures in my stuff of that color Bronco.

Mine was Mallard Green, now it's 98' Expedition Olive green metallic.

Mine is a 74 with an 8 = Sandpiper Yellow. Original and still looks decent

Mine is bright white now.

Originally it was a pastel green color, and it appears to have a "K" color code. I've never seen that code in any of the listings, including yours above. The VIN plate has some thick paint over it though, so it's kinda hard to read.

My 74 is also code 8 but the color is actually tampico yellow like the 73's. It's listed as tampico on my Ford build sheet. My 74 service manual says code 8 is sandpiper yellow but the color swatches I've seen of it are slightly different.

Mine is code L = Holly Green.................. & rust;D

From the factory: Z code Hot Ginger Poly. Repainted by original owner to dark gray w/pink & blue stripes (very Miami Vice-ish). He wanted it to match the RV he towed it behind.

I painted back to Hot Ginger Poly 1 week after I bought it. I was somewhat lucky in that the original owner didn't touch the interior. Still have some nice factory inspection stamps under the dash.

Sporting the original Hot Ginger Poly same as Dan's!

I think I've got an early 73 ranger, factory c4 with skinny brake pedal, green houndstooth interior (used to be anyway) - medium metallic green. It's now cosmic green (pretty close - a little lighter and a little more yellow in it).

My72 is code R Sequoia brown poly, My 74 is code N Ivy glow poly My 71 that got stolen was K boxwood green Now cream yellow.

Mine is '76 color code D-"Blue Poly"

Wasn't "Royal Maroon" used in '69 too???

my 77 is code "s"....Big Ballin Badass Blue......ok dark blue poly, but the other one sounds better. LOL

That's weird/cool maybe it was delivered in primer. It makes me wonder if it had been part of a fleet for a business or something.

What year is the Bronco??? Are you sure the 4th character in the VIN isn't a G instead of a 6???
