put the floor shifter on my 3 speed but know i have to clutch to take it out of gear then clutch to put it in gear cant figure whats goin on when i dont do that it grinds like a f-ck-r

It's also possible that you're able to shift faster with the floor shifter, and that's over-taxing your tired old synchronizers. Or tired old lube.
How long since the gear lube has been changed out? If never, do it now. If it has at least been done in the past, you might try a slipperyer lube. Say a 75w/90 synthetic maybe?
Assuming you're not running that already that is.
