Couple of thoughts on this. On my old STC top I took a tread die and ran some threads for two nuts to fit the rods at the windshield. It added a little adjustment but also firmed up the door frames so they stayed put. It was a little more work to fully drop the frames when you go top down but...
I ended up going with Wheel Vintiques from Summit Racing. They are 15x8 with 33's. No plans to run caps but later model dog dish may fit.
I have seen some steel wheels on EB's with the inside tabs for smaller caps but to me that tab style looks off and more suited for the 50's trucks...

As far as messing up your paint: Your top can be set on the Bronco without the corner post installed. Then remover your taillight lenses and buckets. The corner post can then be fished up into place and bolted up.
