So I bought pretty much the complete setup last fall and had the harmonic re-balanced to 28 oz (going on a 351w). Anyway, I'm just now getting around to installing, but I've got a snag:

The driver's side mount (A/C) boss for the idler is 25mm whereas the passenger side mount (alt) idler boss is 17 mm. All the replacement idlers I found, all years of explorer 5.0, show (where listed) a 17 mm inner diameter.

I received a bunch of idlers and pulleys in the box and have finally figured out the tensioner and alt, but this one has me stumped. All of the ones I received also have a 17 mm inner diameter.

Am I missing something simple? The bracket in question has a "F87E-3C511-BA" part number.

Thanks.

JP

Look in my build thread on the first page - I've got several pics of the explorer set-up to see the pulley set-up. I'll look tonight to see how the actual brackets are.

Solution Found!

So, just for the archive:

I found the solution. The Ford part (not the aftermarket) works with this out of the box. Here's pics:

The Ford part number is 6L2E-6C348-AA and cost $36 at the local dealer, but can be had for $23 online.

That looks like the tensioner pulley. My driver's side pulley has rails on the side to keep the belt from slipping off. Can't find any numbers on them though.

Yep, got one of those too but without the doodad in the center (hence my confusion). The tensioner pulley rides on a boss (again 17mm) with the bolt just keeping it from slipping off the boss. All the after market idlers seem to have deleted the side rails. Ford showed two idlers only- smooth and ribbed (I sense a sex joke in there somewhere....).

Here's what Kragen shows (again without the center doodad- WTF?!):

I think you're right about the aftermarket pulleys. I searched and could not find one with the rails. The rails may not be necessary judging from the wear marks on my old pulley. The belt seemed to ride in the center pretty well. Still, I plan on using the original pulleys (with new bearings) when I install it in the next month or so.
