4R70W Advanced Adapter help

I am using AA part 50-2704E, the adapter for the 4r70w to the Dana 20. It’s the one where you replace the shaft in the transmission, not the one where you cut the stock shaft.
I understand modifying the stock cross member, no issues cutting, grinding, welding.
As others have said, for as much as you pay for their parts you’d think they could have decent instructions.

I have cut the cross member per their pictures and waiting to weld it back together after I get everything lined up and fit properly to assure no more clearance required. I used a rasp to widen the stock bushing mounts.
The stock bushings are not lining up properly with the aluminum casting. Even if I continued to grind, it would not resolve itself. You can see in the pics they the casting fits the bushing washer perfectly - same radius, but the center of the hole is way out. If you cheat and make the center of the hole line up, the bushing interferes with the casting.
Also, the 7/16-1/2 bushings they sent do not fit the stock 1/2” sleeves, and are way sloppy if used in the bushings by themselves.
I know that so many of y’all have used this kit I hope someone can tell me what I’m doing wrong or overlooking.

Like Viperwolf said, you have to reshape the top of the rubber bushing. I just used a sanding pad on a die grinder and ground down one side to about a 45* angle to clear. Thought I had a pick but can’t find it.

Here are a couple pictures of my modifications. I am using the Tom's Offroad crossmember.

Thanks for the tips...I was thinking I'd have to do that since I don't know what I did with the original AA stuff. Not there yet, but hopefully soon!

I think I saw another post that ground the adapter, so that's also an option but obv more risky!

This is just what I needed… I’ll be grinding those bushings down tonight. Thank y’all for the quick replies!

What about the sleeves for the 7/16 bolts? Any luck at a hardware store?

Much better now! Also found a 5/8 drill bit and ran it through my existing bushings to allow the new reducer bushings to fit. One more step closer!

I have another question about this adapter. I’ve got everything back together and ready to go in, but there is this double lip seal still in the packaging that I did not find a home for. The only place I can think it was supposed to go is inside the bearing retainer, but the AA instructions show using a different deal with the open face towards transmission (#716713). Should I have used the double lip seal here instead, or would it have even fit?

Yes, that's for inside the bearing retainer shown here:
https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/produ...Double_Lip_Seal/Bronco_Automatic_Transmission

You sure the AA one isn't double as well? Pretty sure the one they gave me for my kit that I installed was. there are lots of makers of the seal

The AA one should be:
https://www.advanceadapters.com/4337
I was afraid so, but so much easier to correct now than later. The second link is the seal I installed, and their instructions say open side towards transmission. I was very careful to do it per the instructions so I don’t think it was a double lip. My Dana 20 was still mated to my c4 when I put the adapter together, so I was assuming it would find a home once I took the D20 off the stock adapter.

Thank you!

Def easier to replace now than wish you had later!

Just wanted to update this thread in hopes of helping someone in the future doing this same project. The 4r70w and adapter are in the truck now. I made some new crossmember mounts - the ones that bolt to the frame. I used some 3x3 angle and closed the ends with some speed tabs I had laying around. I think this was easier than modifying the stick ones since the bolt from the crossmember is just about where the stock mount ends.

Next question, and I’m going to search after posting these pics…. The gasket between the adapter and the D20 does not fit over the bearing retainer. I think I read about this somewhere.

You have to trim the gasket

Also, what are those crossmember supports that fit the original holes?

That's because it goes between the tcase and the bearing retainer. Put the gasket over the hole then put the bearing retainer in the tcase.

That’s what I thought I read somewhere before. Ok, I’ll get that done.
I know I need to RTV those bolts, but does anything else need rtv? I was thinking about putting a skim of it on the retainer where it slips into the adapter.

That’s what I was referring to that I made out of some 3x3 angle. I used the stock mounts to get my holes in the right places and at the right angle. I never realized how angled they were from the factory like that.

I like to put a small bead in that inside corner where the retainer flange is. The oring is supposed to seal that up, but I don't trust it.
