I removed the hinge on my '72 and spaced in a piece of 1/8" flat bar. Welded the flat bar then welded the frame in. It came out fairly nice. I run a Besttop softtop and had no trouble with it. I'm about to start another build in the spring and plan on doing the same thing on that one.

Thanks everyone! After reading all of the comments I decided to not pull the trigger on this one and do a lot more reading and decide what it is that I am really trying to do and the ways to get there. After reading all of the comments here and other places I'm now leaning towards a 351.

I have the chance to buy a 5.0l out of a 95 Explorer for $500. It comes with a new intake, carb and distributor. I would be replacing the 302 that currently resides. Other than the 50 or so thousand miles newer that the 5.0l offers is there any benefit to this? I planned on pulling the old 302...

I don't want to mess you up but if I remember correctly when I went to install mine I thought the same thing but it worked with no leaks. Of course there were a good number of adult beverages emptied that day!!
