Rear License Plate

Just a curious question about the design of the 1966 rear license plate hanger. Why was it designed to fold up?

All the 66-77 were like that. Must have been for those trips to the lumber yard, etc.

I'd always Assumed%) it was to make it easier to wash the tailgate.

Most all tailgated vehicles (mainly pickups) were designed to drive with the tailgate in an optional down position for long loads (the lumber yard). And most tailgated vehicles have their license plate on the bumper. With the Bronco having its license plate on the tailgate, it needed a design to make it visible while carrying tailgate down type loads. So, flip down tailgate. ;) Oops!!! Flip down license plate bracket.:-[
