I just installed a Winters shifter in my bronco. Does anyone have any advise on how to hook up the back up lights. Do I need to install the switch back on the transmission?

With that shifter there are no provisions for a reverse light switch, just a park safety switch. A few guys on here fabbed up a reverse switch using another PSS and relocating the bracket. Or you could run a manual switch. You can't run the factory NSS/reverse lights, because it's removed to allow for the Winters shift lever. Another nice option is to add a separate NSS bypass, so you don't have to run it all the way back to Park to start the engine.

garberz,
I don't know how long they have been available but I'm still waiting for mine.
I wish that information would have been available when I bought the shifter. Even in the the instructions from Winters it tells you to remove the stock neutral safety switch but nothing about if it is to be reused or not or if there are other options.
WH doesn't list that particular switch for sale but if you pull up item #8357 (park safety only) you will see 2 PDF's for installation instructions, one of them is the instructions for the park safety with back-up lights.

Please keep us posted on how well it works - that's been one of the few shortcomings of that shifter.

I used that #11186 with an Art Carr a couple summers ago. I think I ordered it through Jeff's too. Has worked great. Would think it would work on the Winter's if the roll pin humps are in the same spot. Aren't they identical? Pretty sure I still have an unused NSS only if someone needs to just get that aspect up and running. PM me.

The guys at Wild Horses told me that the Art Carr and Winters shifters are the exact same thing. Thanks for all the info!

The backup light switch would be nice but the Winters shifter #1 drawback in my book is the lack of a light for the gear indicator position. When wheeling in the dark it's a royal PITA.

Would be nice to have a light so you could run a quick check on shifter position after ratcheting it back and forth while moving back and forth in the rocks or nasty spots. I keep all lights off in the cab when wheeling to keep night vision better...

Update

I got the park/neutral safety and back-up light switch installed in the shifter and there was a few minor modifications that had to be made but nothing too extreme.
#1 I had to space the switches apart with flat washers which helped with 2 issues. It helped the switches line-up on the cams better and the switch bracket fit the shifter rails better.
#2 I had to file down the "neutral" cam some because it was hitting the switch a lot harder than the "park" cam.
#3 A slight modification to the floor needed to be made because if the shifter is mounted on a flat surface (with the Winters housing) when pulled back to first gear the "park" cam would hit the floor.
I didn't get to the electrical part as of yet but maybe in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the update. Just so I'm following correctly, this switch allows starting in Park and Neutral? Mine only starts in park.

Thanks for the update. Just so I'm following correctly, this switch allows starting in Park and Neutral? Mine only starts in park.
There are 2 plates and two switches.
1 plate has 2 cams (humps) that engage the 1 switch (the one on the right) when in park and in neutral.
The 2nd plate has 1 cam that engages the switch on the left when the shifter is in reverse for back-up lights.
No instructions are given to hook up electrically but since there are only 4 wires going to the stock neutral safety switch I guess I can muddle through it.
