To check end play on a C4/C5, the transmission with the pump bolted internals are assembled and torqued in place (valve body not installed). A dial indicator is positioned on the input shaft and zeroed after pushing the shaft into the pump. A long screwdriver or pry bar is placed between the sungear shell and one of the ears on the reverse drum. Pry the shell toward the front and take a dial indicator reading. If the reading is not in spec., the pump needs to be removed which will likely dislodge some thrust washers and install another #2 washer of a different thickness. My new “Easy Tooling” end play tool eliminates the need of installing and removing the pump multiple times to change the #2 washer. For those who do C4/C5 work on a regular basis or if just working on a single unit with no history, no knowledge of original end play or washer size, this tool can be a time saver. You only need a depth mic. or veneer caliper to use. Package includes instructions, measurement bar, insert, two bolts and washers. If you want more info on this tool and how to use it, just email me.
