So I went by and talked with the guy that is fixing my top today. He was concerned before going any further about the top flexing. I am going to attempt to post a video to show you guys what it is doing. He is worried that if it does this kind of flexing after it’s painted it could crack. Anybody else had any dealings with this? Disclaimer is that the front brace is out right now when the video was shot.

My body shop guy in North GA had the same concerns. I told him not to worry cause that top had been flexing for 45 years and would continue to flex when I tried to put it back on!!! He painted it, I hauled it to SC and hung it up for a year and then put it on. No cracks!!
Good Luck!!!;D;D;D

You could not worry about it, and it would probably be fine, but it definitely adds to the noise level inside the cab since it acts like a big speaker. Adding some bows, or making sure the ones you have are properly installed is never a bad idea...there's been some discussion on here about using panel adhesive for best results, but I no experience with that.

Do you guys think the dynamat would turn loose and fall down if exposed to sun and hot temperatures in the summer. It can get real hot here in Alabama. that is what I am concerned about using something like this.

Hi Bdhand,

My 66 did the same thing.

On a 66/67 top the bows are bolted to a bracket at each end, making them adjustable. If your top is from a 66/67 just look at the bows near where they connect, loosen the bolts, stand under it and push it tight against the inside of the top then snug those bolts down.

If they are not bolt-in, you could gently remove the spot weld, drill elongated holes and bolt it together with small fender nuts. I'll go out into the garage, take some photos of mine and try to post it to this thread. Before the bows were available in from aftermarket, I took extras from a rusted out top and added more to solve the problem. For the mounting brackets on each side, I took a 3x5 flash card, made a template and made the brackets out of extra sheet metal from the dead hard top I had.

I'll be right back, then let me see if I can post the photos.

Hi,

I still have no idea why these always upload upside down. If someone can please fix them, fantastic, if not please just adjust your view accordingly.

Photo 1, 4 bows, two stock, two add ons. Stock brackets are spot welded to the frame.
Photo 2, 66/67 stock bolt in bows.
Photo 3, homemade adjustable bracket. 90 degree bend, then curved to match the roof.
Photo 4, homemade bracket bolted to hard top frame, not welded.
Photo 5, my top just hanging around waiting to have it's picture taken.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks for the pics Chris! I may just add two more myself. What material did you put between your braces?

Hi,
I just used double foiled bubble wrap from the interweb. In my experience dynamat is neat but after a few years it makes a sticky mess, jute absorbs water and sags. So far this stuff insulates a little bit from the heat, stops rattles, doesn’t need adhesive behind the ribs and was fairly cheap.
I’m glad to help, good luck and post photos of your project!
