Another Stroppe Ambulance surfaces!

We all know about the infamous Balloon Chase Ambulance, but did you know that Stroppe built others? Neither did I til a few years ago when one surfaced. A Strange double Stroppe-rollbar'd Red Bronco came available on Craigslist then, and I began to wonder what it was. With a full garage at the time I had to pass, but eventually asked Willie Stroppe about it and he said "Sure, thats one of the ones we built for the Long Beach Lifeguards at the City Beach. Wow, but still no photo documentation. Unfortuneately I didn't act fast enough and someone else picked it up and took some parts off of it, and put it out to pasture. Fast forward to Decemeber, after parting ways with my Stroppe Courier, I decided it might be fun to track down. This time I called the Long Beach Life Guard Assoc, and was able to find what I needed in terms of pictures! Wow. Check this out. I brought it home to Baja Broncos Unlimited 2 weeks ago. Needs work, but it'll come back! They made 2 in 70 and 1 in '74. The first two were completely equipped as rescue ambulances, and the 74 was slightly less outfitted.

Thanks guys it's fun and I'm glad to have saved it.... just will be alot of work! But worth it. A Bronco buddy pointed out to me yesterday - it's Stroppe history as well as CA history and beach culture, so thats even more incentive to get it done. Here's a little more.

Great find, I love stuff like this! Finding the rare, obscure stuff from Ford's history. Only let down was I was hoping some Bay Watch beauties were going to be in that beach picture!;)

Thanks JG and all, I wish it had been in better shape, but it is what it is, and there's enough of it.
What created the push to get it saved was that the rollbar had been sold out of it, to my friend Dave. I'd ended up with the steering wheel years ago....so luckily both have been reunited with the truck. Dave made the sale happen as the previous owner doesn't sell any Bronco whole. He owns many but his deal is parting them out.... gulp.... Anyway, that's in the past. Future looks bright.

Glad you were able to track it down and bring it home. Doesn’t look as bad as you’d think for being initially used on the beac and then out to pasture. Is the bale of hay on the nearby truck meant to put some meat, I mean fenders back on its bones?;D

Very cool find!

I was talking to Willie last night and he was amazed that it still exited. He remembered it specifically as well as a story of someone (I forget the name of hand, but he remembered it right away) who wrecked one of them driving down from Signal Hill.

That pretty cool so one question what is that hauling the roll bar?

Thanks BajaBrewer for fixing my pics.

That is a former Fire Truck Dodge power wagon a buddy has repurposed as his daily ranch helper truck. He has some Broncos too including a '68 Halfcab that was Baja kitted in by a texas dealer when it was 2 years old with 351W, PS, AUTO, dual shocks, rollbar, bumper braces.
