I'm upgrading to 4.56 gears and was treated to an episode of "here's your Bronco" this morning. While removing the original parts, I discovered that the rear differential case (where the ring gear bolts onto) had cracked completely around the circumference of the case.

I had to laugh as I was on the phone ordering another Yukon product.

good time to go to a daytona style too. the bearing life is so much better, with the lower gears the stock support just isn't up to the task.

We found a carrier cracked like that in my 72 years ago. The crack was about an inch shy of all the way around

Good catch, after broken but before it completely exploded.
How sloppy was the backlash? Just thinking if the races on the 3rd member might have spread?

Had the same experience years ago in the '77 F150 4x4 I had at the time. Coming home from one evening, slowed down to turn onto my street, I clutched it and downshifted, let out on the clutch as I turned the corner, and "nothing". At first I thought I missed a gear and shifted into neutral, but figured out that wasn't the case. I locked the hubs in and drove the rest of the way home on the front axle. When I tore mine down I found it had separated right at the flange where the ring gear bolts, it broke so clean it looked as though it was cut with a lazer.

This is the best advice in this thread.
