700R4 with Atlas in my Bronco

After blowing up my transmission a little over a year ago at the Arizona Bronco Stampede (Watch it here lol: https://youtu.be/zdV7EoZBbzY), I made the decision to go with a 700R4 Transmission. It was something that no one at WILD HORSES has done before, so my dad and I wanted to try something new. Gordon Bailie suggested the setup and was a big help in getting some kind of direction with this project.

The transmission itself would have been a fun enough project to tackle, but we decided to throw an Atlas into the mix just to make things slightly more complicated. On top of that, with Gordon's guidance, we hacked the mess out of the frame to clock the Atlas up for more ground clearance.

While this whole project was daunting at the beginning(the reason it took so long), after it was tackled and pieced in and tested and working as it should, I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Sure, there's a bright orange crossmember underneath my rig, but that's just part of the fun haha

This video goes through all of the work...well, most of the work that it took to do this swap, so if that's something you're interested in, check it out!;D Feel free to ask any questions here or in the comments on YouTube. Thanks! Also, I'll post a few pictures!

Nice work, Mitch. I've had one in my truck since 2006, with a 4 speed Atlas hung out back. It was a good choice for me back then and I haven't regretted it - it's been a great transmission.

Todd any Pic's of yours? I am also thinking about an Atlas 4 but cant determine if I want a 700R4 or Ford OD (with the lower 2.84 gear)

I'll try and remember to take some pics and post them. Keep bugging me if I forget :). Caveat - my truck is a driver and not a show truck underneath.

Every time I look at pictures I realize I should spend just a little more time down there with my rag and can of brake cleaner. Oh well. Mine's been in there since 2007 and works fine. The t-case is only about 1/4" away from the driver's side framerail but has never hit. Protofab built the crossmember for me - it's not sexy but as strong as the Golden Gate bridge. It attaches to the frame using the original 4 crossmember holes on each side - a design requirement I specified.

That's a pretty gnarly setup! The crossmember definitely looks beefy! Do you ever have clearance issues on the trail?

Nice set up Mitch. I never really considered that combination but might do so when it’s time to build my adventure Bronco!

Thanks, Mark! Now all I have to do is upgrade that 302 haha but I'm gonna have some fun with it first!

Speaking of which... have you been able to put some miles on the trans and atlas since the install?
