Maybe a longshot question but wondering if my Bronco that was built in Nov. 1971 but from what I can tell by research falls in the 1972 sales year would have had a 302 badge on it?

Thank you
Mark

My 10/71 does have it on the drivers side but not on the passengers side

68-71 only, that wasn't a carry over item. Previous owner probably just liked the way it looked and added them.

I don’t think the jury has decided on this one yet… Look at the chrome gutter trim that 10/71 truck has as well. Another “67-71 only” feature that I have seen on another early 10/71 truck. What is the VIN?
I know mine built on 10/22/71 doesn't have either of those options…

Neither of my friend's '72 Explorers had the 302 badge, but I have no way of verifying when they were built.
With Broncos it's hard to believe that some things did not pass over to the next model year even when they were not supposed to. We see it so often it's not surprising when you find another.

From factory mine was a bare bones heavy duty package with a 302. It has been restored probably twice. When I got it the side marker lights had been filled in but the wiring was there, so this type of change makes it hard to tell what may have been there from factory. Guessing I had no fancy trim

I'm not looking to hyjack your thread mbroadbridge, but I've got a similar question I've wondered about but didn't feel it warranted a thread.
My 67 had a 289 and a fender badge. The 289 was not rebuildable, so a 302 was put in. Are there any opinions as to whether a 289 badge or 302 badge are 'more' correct? The truck is a Frankenstein, so I don't know why this item bugs me. I feel the 302 is correct, but wrong on a 67. It currently has neither.
Again, apologies.

This one is easy. The answer is "289." The 289 emblem is a C3OZ-16228-B. It belongs on your 67 Bronco. The 302 emblem is a C8OZ-16228-B. It belongs on a 1969-1971 Bronco. The incorrect emblem does not belong on the Bronco.

Nobody cares if you put the wrong crankshaft in your 289 and made it a 302. Nobody cares if you bored your 289 oversized by .030 and made it displace 293 cubic inches. Nobody cares if you bored your 302 and made it displace 306 cubes. Nobody cares that your 5.0 displaces 4.9 Liters. Nobody calls a 350 chevy a 355 when it gets bored. And a 350 Chevy does not magically become a 351 when the cylinder taper gets to +.004, even though it now displaces 351 cubic inches. There is no such thing as a 306 Ford. There is no such thing as a 331. No such thing as a small block 427. Nope. You don't own the name. Engine families and displacements are registered with the EPA for emissions, safety, and compliance requirements. Stop denying science.

Engines have names. Names are used to describe features and attributes so that people can identify them. Your Bronco proudly displaces it's engine FAMILY with the 289 emblem. It declares with authority that it is not a puny, low life 6 cylinder. It IDENTIFIES as a superior, N-code, from the factory V8. Loud an proud. It has been endowed by it's creator. This identity is assigned at birth. Regardless of the addition of "hardware." Stop enabling identity dysphoria.

By 1972, the Bronco became gentrified...and lost it's ability to self-identify. It was forced underground and had to hide it's displacement preference on a federally mandated sticker under the hood. Those were dark times. Next would be the chopping off of the third pedal. This trend was FINALLY remedied in 2021 with the ecoboost badge! Now available in your Badlands with a whopping 138 Cubic Inches!!!

Thanks jamesroney. That is one of the best responses and reasons I've read. And while a little disappointed I didn't have that logic on my own, I'll buy it entirely.
Original 289 emblem it is, with enthusiasm.

I was just going to say, “keep the 289 emblem” or such. But I like James’ answer better!

I think I will put a 302 on my 71 built but maybe 72 sold…. I will go the new way and mount it with 3M tape so it can always come off with a heat gun…. Someone will likely gladly point out the flaw at a car show!

My 71 is also a "sport" maybe that is why the emblem is there?

No. It's like James said in his post earlier. All the V-8 broncos had engine badges on the fender from late '66s to early '72s if they were V8 equipped. The fender badge was basically "Bragging Rights". The "289" appeared on the '66 to '68 Broncos and were followed by the "302" until they disappeared in the '72 production year.
