The engine developed a knock today. right before plow season....nice. Considering my options. Kinda mad at the moment.... there was no warning it ran great up untill I started it up today. I would like to kick it .....so far I have refrained!.... no wonder my wife calls it JUNKO.

Tell me what you think

I still want to kick this thing but I need to get over it and move on. People are depending on me to plow for them this year so I have to be ready. I have a few options and want to get some opinions. Keep in mind winter is here so I need to keep downtime at a minimum. I am planning on running the current engine (351w) until I can do a swap…unless it blows first!

Engines I have that I can put in are as follows:

1. 67 289 would need to be rebuilt first.
2. ? 289 hypo runs but smokes
3. 351c rebuilt has 3000 miles on it.
4. My rebuilt 351w that was for my 66 project.
5. Buy a running 351w and put it in.

Also since I have to do the engine I am going to put my C6 in at the same time. I am tired of shifting gears it just kills my knee. I would like to be able to start and finish in the same day or at the most in the same weekend. Anyone want to offer up an opinion to help a bronco bro out?

I was contemplating putting my 351 from the 66 project in it, but I found a good running 351/C6/205 combo so I am going that route instead. I am going to get started pulling the old stuff out tomorrow. I wanted to do the swap in a weekend but I have a few weeks before the new stuff is going to be ready to pick up, so I am going to fix some holes and paint under the hood. I am hoping to have the swap completed with the snow plow mounted and working before I go back to work the Monday following Thanksgiving. I hope it don’t snow too much between now and then!
I really wish I didn’t have to go through all this trouble…. but since I have to do the engine I might as well make the best of it and do it up right. I’ll keep everyone updated as I go. Jeff

Sounds like you have a solid plan. Wish I were closer so I could help out. Good luck.

Thanks Izzy! Help would be nice Sometimes ....I might have to buy you a plane ticket one of these days lol!!

My brother did help me do some clean up around the barn. It was such a mess I had to get some organization before I started working on the Bronco.... It took all day yesterday to get it cleaned up and tools put back where they belong. We are going to start pulling the drive train tomorrow after work. We should get the engine and transmission out tomorrow. then I am going to clean up/paint under the hood. I will get the "new" drivetrain this comming friday. Here are some before / after pics of my mess and the last one is of the Bronco inside awaiting its new drivetrain.

Engine trans/transfercase is out.

My brother came over again to help remove the engine and transmission. We got Them out in good time. He got here at about 4:15pm and left at 7:15 pm and we had it all unbolted. I stayed to finish taking them out and was done at about 7:45pm. I figured that was enough excitement for one day so I came home to watch some football and spend the rest of the evening here on Classic! Attached are some proof pics that I actually did something to the Bronco today!

I started cleaning up the engine bay today. I have a huge hole in my wheel well and another on the inner fender. I am not sure how most people would fix this but I came up with cutting up some cardboard into a pattern to use. it worked ok when I did the floor boards. I only got 1 side done tonight I hope to get the other side tomorrow and then I will fix the cowl and paint on friday.

A whole lotta cleaning.

I spent most of the weekend cleaing stuff up and getting it ready to go in. I had help from my brother and Bill yesterday.

Bill did the welding on the inner fenders for me and Paul took the Serp. pully's off the new engine while I was cleaning everything off and painting.

I am going to start putting stuff in tomorrow morning. Here are some pics of the progress.

After Bill got done welding I used POR15 over some rust but all I had was gray and didnt like it so I got some flat black and spray bombed over the POR15. Here is how it turned out. I think it looks alot better now.

Thanks for your help Bill and Paul!

C6 Install

The C6 is in! As you can see in the pics this was not a direct bolt in! I had a blast putting this thing in!! It took about 6 hours just to get the transmission/ transfer case in and bolted down. The 205 is a beast! It is alot bigger/ heavier than the Dana 20. It has 1" clearance between the transfer case and the drivers side frame rail. I had to decide on the fly if I wanted to do a body lift or raise the transmission tunnel. I went with raising the tranny tunnel because it is going to be quicker and cheaper than a lift and new mounts, lowering the radiatior etc..... Besides I like the stance of the Bronco the way it is I dont want it any taller. Bill will be over soon and we will fab and weld new supports and sheet metal to replace the tunnel.

converting to an auto column

I dont like floor shifters! they take up too much room in an already cramped halfcab. So I took out the 3 speed column and put in an automatic column. It wasnt as bad as I remembered it being, it only took a couple hours. I was afraid I was going to have to remove the half top to get the 3 speed column out but it cam out the passanger side window pretty easy. The auto column is alot shorter and I didnt have any problem getting it back in there. I need to make a "dent" in the front wheel well to make room for a rag joint then I the steering universial I bought from B.C last year to hook the shaft to the box. I should have most of this wrapped up tomorrow. I am waiting on my new pulley's from BroncoGraveyard otherwise I would be done with everything except the floor tomorrow.
