BC tank. Where do I put the in tank fuel pump?

Hey folks,

So my BC tank is out. I am changing the frame mounted fuel pump to in-tank. Any thoughts where it goes? The only opening is where the fuel sender came out.

Thanks!

Looks like you have the old tank like I do. The new one looks like it has a handhole and threaded fittings for pickup and return. Since you have yours out, can you verify that the vent and return are for hose and not threaded please?

Here are our instructions for installing a pump into the Sherman. Since it uses the same removable top plate design, you should be able to use these to at least get a close reference:
http://www.wildhorses4x4.com/product/ShermanTankEFIConversionkit
Click on the instructions to follow the steps and see if the pics coincide with what you have.

I'm not sure what all has changed with the BC tank over the years, but they would be the best ones to know for sure if just attaching the pump in the same way will work with the old one like it does with the newer ones.
If you're not able to get in touch, maybe a close-up shot of the inside of yours, including the pickup tube, would help other members here tell if what you have will work. Or if you'll have to tweak things a little.
But I'm sure you'll be able to make somethign work.

Good luck.

I recently did a little research on mine as I was considering going to in-tank as well. I bought mine in '06 and they said the kit Paul linked would work. I also have fittings to convert the feed/return lines to -6 AN fittings.

Ok so it looks like it goes in the same hole as where the sending unit and float arm goes? Sorry for such a dummy question. Just trying to avoid getting a new tank or cutting a hole in this one!

One thing the directions does not say is how far off the bottom the strainer should be.. Hopefully Paul will chime in on that. I would think 1/2" or so should be good??

The pump inlet sock should just be above the surface of the bottom of the tank, not touching. Hard to gauge since you cannot see well in there...

Something to consider is that EFI tanks usually have some kind of anti-slosh box around the pick up so it does not suck air as you drive over uneven surfaces. Not something easily retrofitted.

pics of the sending unit

Ok this is what came out. The fab shop (does all makes, not EB specific) says he is concerned there will be starvation issues on steep inclines based on the location.

Yes, that's an EFI tank.

BC has a pretty good baffle setup in their tank. I've never had starvation issues and mine is theoretically worse because I use an external pump.

There should be two holes to U-strap the pump too, and that stud you have is for the ground.

Looks like it although I think they've upgraded to Walbro pumps now.

You could always use a conduit bracket, and believe it or not the holes on the bracket line right up with the holes in the brace at the bottom of the Sherman Tank.

As a side note to anyone considering this, it may have better cooling and lubrication for the pump inside the tank, but if you plan on running dual tanks, you may lose the capacity of the aux tank if you plan on using the electronic fuel selector valve sold by most Bronco vendors. Electronic Fuel Valve needs to be connected prior to the fuel pump. If your pump is in the rear main tank, this will complicate things.
