• Be EXTREMELY cautious if someone offers to buy your Bronco for more than your asking price and sight unseen. ESPECIALLY if the buyer is overseas. It's probably a scam.

This has come up before, but I wanted to remind people since apparently members here have been targeted recently.

Be EXTREMELY cautious if someone offers to buy your Bronco for more than your asking price and sight unseen. ESPECIALLY if the buyer is overseas. It's probably a scam.

Here's how it works...

They send you a cashiers check for the sale amount plus extra to pay their friend for shipping (or customs or processing, etc.). So say you're selling for $7,000. They'll send you a cashiers check for $10,000. They send you the check. You cash it and wait a couple days for it to clear. The friend comes and picks up the truck and the extra $3,000 for shipping. A week later your bank calls and says, "Oops, the check was a fraud and didn't actually clear. Sorry!" They pull the money back out of your account.

Doh!!! You're now out 1 truck and $3,000. :'(

I'm refreshing this old post to add some new warnings.

Be very cautious of brand new members contacting you trying to sell you a part.

Warning signs:
  1. Brand new member with few to no posts
  2. Gives you the email address of a "friend" who just happens to have the exact part you're looking for at a good price.
  3. When you contact the person they want you to use Paypal "friends & family" or Zelle or Venmo so "they don't have to pay a transaction fee".
  4. You send the money, they never send the part and you never hear from them again.
Paypal "Friends and Family" or Zelle or Venmo DO NOT offer any buyer protection. They are only supposed to be used to pay people you already know and trust (ie. "friends and family") Once you send money using those services the money is gone. The payment company will not help, even if you were clearly scammed.

Paypal "Goods and Services" does offer buyer protection. Venmo now offers it too if you "turn on for purchases" when you pay. They both charge a fee (~2% or 3%) for this protection. The scammer will say they don't want to use these payment methods because they want to save on the fee, but it's really because they don't want you to be protected. If you really want the part tell the seller you'll pay the few extra bucks for the fee. If they decline then you know it's a scam.
