I'm hoping to use the box/holder that came out of the 96 van donor I'm using. With my luck, it will not work as planed.

The full size van mount works just fine, I went for it, figured it out, made it work, a few years back. See attached pic. You could also use it elsewhere on the firewall. That is the drivers side, rear corner of the engine compartment. It is a very snug fit right there, but the ECU box occupies un-used space between/above the E-brake assembly and the kick panel. I did have to notch the top of the E-brake assembly so the ECU would slide all the way in.

Has anyone tried putting these under the hood, possibly in a waterproof box.

Have you looked into the Ford Escape ECU mounting box? It's a fairly well sealed aluminum box. I've picked one up for someone else in the past. It's pretty stout if you want it in a sealed box.

I don't have an e brake pedal or vent box, so that's where I put mine. When I get it all buttoned up, I'll have a cover hanging over it all to keep mud and water off of it.

Mine fits with the E-brake and when I test fit the fresh air box, it should clear as well. But, I have the fresh air box removed currently. It is a tight fit for everything in that space. Ahuggins....is the one you pictured from an Explorer?

I mounted mine in the firewall dead center under the cowl. Used a 2004 Ford Escape box. Fits perfectly and looks stock (ish).
